Netflix Quietly Removes Popular Thriller 'Stolen Away' After 6 Years

Netflix has removed its original thriller series Stolen Away after six years on the platform.

Created by Natxo López, the Spanish-language series was released on Netflix in the United States in October 2020, where it opened to strong reviews from critics and made an impressive dent in the platform's viewership figures.

The show centers around a vengeful father who travels to Colombia in search of the man who kidnapped his daughter many years prior in Valencia, Spain. What follows is a dangerous pursuit of cat-and-mouse in a city where protagonist Antonio has lost the upper hand.

Stolen Away stars Spanish actor Daniel Grao in the lead role, with a supporting ensemble that includes Carolina Lapausa, Melani Olivares, and Fernando Solórzano. While the show wasn't a massive success in the United States, it quickly became one of Netflix's leading global titles thanks to the strong critical reception.

The news of Stolen Away's disappearance may come as a surprise to some viewers, as Netflix typically doesn't remove its own original series from the platform, simply because they have no place else to go. Shows that are marketed as Netflix Originals are generally only allowed to be held on Netflix, so when the platform removes them, they're typically gone for good.

Netflix managed to stick to this rule for a few years, but as the streaming service gradually became more and more crowded with original content, the platform made the difficult decision to start cutting some of its own shows. Hemlock Grove was the first victim of this purge-the original series was removed from Netflix in 2022, almost ten years after its premiere.

Stolen Away is next in the firing line, and it's not clear whether audiences are ever going to see the show again. Of course, Netflix still holds the rights to the show, so the platform could decide to bring it back at any point in the future.
