A sunbathing Basset Houndjust became a social media sensation, all because his big floppy ears played a star-making role in a heartwarming dog video. Nearly 300,000 viewers have liked the viral post, which has followers rushing to the comment section and joking that this pup needs a pair of goggles.
In the video, which has been shared nearly 150,000 times, Tom Mater the Basset Hound can be seen soaking up the sun during a boat day with his humans. As the boat speeds across the water, the dog positions himself in the middle of the motorboat near the captain's chair.

While it may seem like Tom Mater's ears are there solely for viewers' entertainment, those signature Basset Hound ears actually serve a very important purpose.
Bred to be expert trackers, Basset Hounds use their ears to help sweep scents toward their noses. Those oversized ears act like a natural broom, directing scent particles upward and making it easier for the dogs to follow a trail.
The breed's large ears may also help reduce distractions, allowing them to focus on the important task at hand-tracking scents.
For this dog in the TikTok video, however, his ears are sweeping up plenty of charm and turning him into a social media star.
Adoring fans flooded the comment section, nearly bursting with enthusiasm over the adorable moment.
