Celebrating Prince's 68th Birthday: A Look at His Legacy as One of the Greatest Singers
The icon that was Prince would've turned 68 today. The multitalented multi-hyphenate was a force of nature whose music still resonates to this day. He even pioneered a subgenre of music-the Minneapolis sound. Prince was, without question, one of the greatest musical talents of his generation (and of all time, if we're being honest).
Prince produced a whopping 39 albums throughout his prolific career, with two studio albums released posthumously. He scored 19 Top 10 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, with five of those peaking at No. 1, including the iconic "When Doves Cry." Among his other accolades are seven Grammys, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and seven Brit Awards.
He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006 during his lifetime. Posthumously, the legendary musician was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2016, the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024.
On top of that, Prince has been included on various best-of lists and rankings over the decades. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him at No. 16 on its list of "The 200 Greatest Singers of All Time." The publication described "Adore" from Prince's 1987 album Sign o' the Times as a "plush assemblage of overdubbed voices, in multiple registers, assembled with audible glee by the guy who also sings lead and plays most of the instruments." It also hailed Prince's vocal performance on "The Holy River" from his 1996 album Emancipation, calling it "a rare, stunning intimacy that only deepens showman moves like the fluty falsetto of 'Kiss.'"
Rolling Stone included the musical artist on several of its music lists, including "100 Greatest Artists" and "The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," the latter of which was also published in 2023.
Do you think Prince is one of the greatest singers of all time? (Opinions are subjective, sure, but the correct one is a resounding "Yes.")
