1992 Classic Ranked Among 'Best Western Movies of All Time' - And It's Timeless

Westerns are a unique film genre, because they take place amid the landscape of the frontier and pay tribute to a unique time in history. There's no beating the classic Western movies that came out decades ago, from The Searchers to High Noon to The Wild Bunch.

So, what makes a great Western movie? It's all the qualities that make any movie good, really, including a great storyline, cinematography, acting, dramatics, costuming and keeping the audience engaged. When a film has all of these qualities, it becomes timeless and a film you can watch over and over again.

Now, one film from 1992 has been named one of the "best western movies of all time," and it has that timeless quality. It's a movie that you can watch time and time again.

That film is 1992's Unforgiven. In a feature from EW, the publication names the movie one of the best in the genre. A big part of the film's success is Eastwood.

"Nearly 30 years after saddling up for A Fistful of Dollars - and cementing his place as Hollywood's most coveted cowboy - Clint Eastwood earned his first Best Actor nomination as a pulled-from-retirement outlaw in Unforgiven," they note in the piece. In the film, Eastwood "blew a big, bloody hole through the notion of a romanticized Old West with this dark, violent tale of an aging killer clashing with a ruthless, corrupt small town sheriff."

Collider also names it one of the best, stating, "It's a movie about a former outlaw taking on what's purportedly one final job, helping out a group of people who feel they've not been taken seriously by their sheriff, who ends up being tremendously corrupt."

Eastwood was nominated for Best Actor in the piece, and he didn't win that, but he did pick up Best Picture and Best Director wins. Unforgiven is really a masterpiece. It's the kind of movie that makes you feel at home the second you turn it on, and once you're sucked in, it's impossible to turn away. This 1992 film deserves to be named among the best in the genre.
