The Top 5 Titles Shown at the Future Games Show

Even though E3 has gone the way of brick-and-mortar video stores, the gaming industry still targets June for its big events. That officially kicked off last Tuesday with Sony's State of Play and continued with Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase, and Nintendo Direct. On Saturday, there also was the Future Games Show, hosted by Troy Baker and Alix Wilton Regan.

It was a bit different than the other shows with a mix of trailers, developer interviews, DLC announcements, and looks at previously released games. While it didn't match the star power of the other shows, there were still 40-plus games shown off. Once again, titles shown off elsewhere, such as ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE and Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, aren't eligible for inclusion here. With that in mind, here were the top five titles shown at the Future Games Show.

5) The Sinking City 2

A sequel to the interesting but flawed 2019 Lovecraftian adventure, The Sinking City 2 edged out THE LIFT: Supernatural Handyman Simulator and BioEden for the final spot. We won't have to wait long to see if the sequel can smooth out the original's rough edges as it's set to launch on August 18.

4) The Pines

The trailer looks heavily influenced by Alan Wake, though its visuals aren't on the same level as what Remedy has conjured. Still, the world could always use another creepy psychological thriller set in a forest. If it even approaches what Alan Wake accomplished, it'll be a win.

3) Dear Van Gogh

Technically, this is an expansion to Sky: Children of the Light, but given what developer thatgamecompany created with Journey, I'm very interested to see what they do with Dear Van Gogh.

2) The Road of Dust and Sorrow

Of the stuff I hadn't seen before, The Road of Dust and Sorrow was the standout. It had unique graphics and an intriguing mix of gameplay with shooting elements but also emotional weight as you try to protect your daughter from whatever calamity has befallen the world.

1) EXODUS

This was clearly the featured game of the presentation as it was mentioned throughout that EXODUS would be closing the show. It's absolutely dripping with BioWare DNA, and the possibility of a genuine spiritual successor to Mass Effect is tantalizing. The extended look has me feeling like developer Archetype Entertainment is on the right track.
