One of the Most Influential Songwriters in U.S. History Died 1 Year Ago Today
One year ago today, the U.S. lost one of the most influential songwriters in history. His name was Brian Wilson, and he is best remembered as a member of the Beach Boys band, but his contributions to music go far beyond that.
Wilson, 82, died on June 11, 2025. "We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world," Wilson's family said, announcing his death. The Beach Boys "rank among the most popular groups of the rock era, with more than 30 singles in the Top 40 and worldwide sales of more than 100 million," The Associated Press reported, adding that the songs, many penned by Wilson, conjured up "instant summer."

Wilson's cause of death was respiratory arrest caused by "decreased respiratory effort," People reported. He had a number of other health issues at the time of his death.
"Neurodegenerative disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic respiratory failure and chronic kidney disease are also listed as other associated factors," according to People. He was placed in a conservatorship before he died, People reported, due to "major neurocognitive disorder (such as dementia)." That decision was made in consultation with his seven kids.

Brian Wilson's legacy "is one of profound innovation, emotional honesty, and enduring influence," his website says.

"Albums like Pet Sounds broke new ground in songwriting, production, and studio experimentation, inspiring generations of musicians from The Beatles to today's most creative artists."
In a statement when he died, the Beach Boys said, "The world mourns a genius, and we grieve for the loss of our cousin, our friend, and our partner in a great musical adventure."

Brian Wilson "wasn't just the heart of The Beach Boys-he was the soul of our sound. The melodies he dreamed up and the emotions he poured into every note changed the course of music forever," added the Beach Boys.
"His unparalleled talent and unique spirit created the soundtrack of so many lives around the globe, including our own. Together, we gave the world the American dream of optimism, joy, and a sense of freedom-music that made people feel good, made them believe in summer and endless possibilities."
Rolling Stone compiled a list of Wilson's 25 greatest songs. They range from Help Me Rhonda to Good Vibrations.Wilson also wrote songs for other artists. An example is Guess I'm Dumb by Glen Campbell. The New York Times published a list of 12 essential Brian Wilson songs.
