27 Years Ago the Greatest Party Rap Song was Released

The rap genre has become a billion-dollar business, with countless hits topping the mainstream Billboard charts over the years. Legends like Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls, 2Pac, Kanye West, Eminem, and newer historymakers Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole have all cranked out several hits that have shaped the genre and have remained fixtures on people's various playlists for years. In terms of club/party playlists, who doesn't have Biggie Smalls' "Juicy," Drake's "Controlla," and now Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" on it?

And yet, all these rappers and all their hits don't compare to a little gem that was released 27 years ago today on June 11. This song in question is, without a doubt in my mind, the greatest party rap song in history.

"Back That Thang Up" Was Released on June 11, 1999

Juvenile, accompanied by Mannie Fresh and Lil Wayne, released "Back That Thang Up," more affectionately known by the real name "Back That Azz Up" on June 11, 1999. Inspired by New Orleans bounce music, the song is just perfection from start to finish. The easily recognizable introduction, succeeded by the first line, "Cash Money Records taking over for the 9-9 into 2000," has become a cue for listeners to automatically prepare to get hyped and have fun.

Then, as Juvenile gets right down to business with his lyrics, following up almost every line with his signature "Yeah," it's soothing to the ears, although again, an uptempo track. And while this is Juvenile's song, it's Mannie Fresh and Lil Wayne who actually have some of the most memorable bars. Mannie Fresh literally takes things over as soon as his verse starts with, "I know you can't stand it." And Lil Wayne is a legend, so his flow is magic per usual.

Now, with all that being said, I can be honest. The song isn't a lyrical powerhouse. And chart-wise, it peaked at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on the Hot Rap chart. Also, it was never recognized by the Grammys. However, don't let any of that fool you. The track is a mainstay in rap culture and has passed from one generation to the next like a family recipe. And whenever it's played, either at a party or at the gym, it's an instant boost of energy.

Juvenile Is Having an Amazing Comeback Year

Talk about staying power. Juvenile is having quite the 2026. Not only has he released "B.B.B." featuring Megan Thee Stallion, which charted within the Billboard Hot 100, but he also lent Church's Chicken a hand in their ongoing beef with Popeyes. We'll all have to keep an eye out to see what he rolls out next.
