Canceled Series Has Become One of Netflix's Most-Watched Shows
This month, the comedy series Shrill arrived on Netflix after its stint on Hulu. And while the show was canceled back in 2021, it seems to have found new life on Netflix as it is now among the streamer's most-watched shows.
Earlier this month, Shrill was added to the vast Netflix library. A week later, it has racked up millions of views and is already among the streaming giant's top-five most-watched series.
What is 'Shrill'?
Created by Aidy Bryant, Alexandra Rushfield and Lindy West and based on West's 2016 book Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, the comedy series Shrill stars Bryant as Annie, a journalist at The Thorn who is "described as a fat young woman who wants to change her life - but not her body."
Throughout the series, Annie juggles bad boyfriends, a sick parent, and a perfectionist boss, all while trying to get her career off the ground.
The series originally debuted on Hulu back in 2019 and ran three seasons before it was abruptly canceled. Shortly after the show's cancellation, KQED's Rae Alexander expressed frustration at the decision, calling the cancellation "a loss" because of how it "showed cool fat women living life with grace and self-love."
While the show has obviously ended, Shrill did well with critics, boasting an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring a 93% from its first season and 83% from Season 2. It also earned a 7.4/10 score on IMDB and a 93% rating on Flicks.
'Shrill' a Hit on Netflix
While it's been seven years since the show debuted and five years since it ended, Shrill has been a hit on Netflix since it was added, despite its cancellation back in 2021.
The show was added to the Netflix library on June 8, and it now sits comfortably within the streamer's top-10 shows, checking in at No. 5 with millions of viewers already, and it continues to rise up the Netflix charts.
The show may have ended, but it's clear that it has found new life with a new audience. Unfortunately for the new viewers, though, there will not be any new seasons coming.
