Oscar-Nominated 'Hamnet' to Stream on Netflix Starting July 6, 2026

Awards season might be over, but you can finally watch this Oscar-nominated gem on Netflix-and soon. 2025's Hamnet will arrive on the streaming juggernaut in July, so be sure to set some tissues aside for your inevitable weekend watch session.

Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Maggie O'Farrell, Hamnet follows William Shakespeare and Agnes Hathaway (also known as Anne) as they navigate their respective grief journeys following the death of their son, Hamnet.

The historical drama stars Jessie Buckley as Agnes, Paul Mescal as Shakespeare, Emily Watson as Mary Shakespeare, Joe Alwyn as Bartholomew Hathaway, Olivia Lynes as Judith Shakespeare, and Jacobi Jupe as Hamnet Shakespeare. Chloé Zhao directed from a screenplay she co-wrote with O'Farrell.

Hamnet premiered in theaters in the US on Nov. 26, 2025, after a successful festival run. It was a box-office hit, grossing $109 million globally on a budget of roughly $30-$35 million. The film hit the UK theatrical circuit on Jan. 9, 2026. Hamnet was well-received by critics, who lauded Buckley's visceral performance as Agnes. The New York Post hailed her as "thunderous, playful, grounded and ethereal." Variety called her performance "heroic," and praised the drama for being "so emotionally raw as to be almost excruciating at times."

It would seem that audiences agree with the critical sentiment. The movie currently sits at 93% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, while the Tomatometer is at 87%.

Hamnet received eight Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director for Zhao, Best Actress for Buckley, Best Adapted Screenplay for Zhao and O'Farrell, Best Original Score, Best Casting, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design. Buckley won, becoming the first Irish actress to take home the statue in the Best Actress category.

Get ready to have your heart stomped on (in a cathartic way) when Hamnet arrives on Netflix on July 6, 2026.
