Indian nonwoven materials manufacturer chooses Lexington site for first US plant

The Triad's manufacturing base of nonwoven textile materials is growing with Wednesday's announcement that an Indian group is opening its first U.S. plant in Lexington.

Supreme Nonwoven Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Supreme Group India, has pledged to create 50 jobs and spend $25.8 million on capital investments on a 214,592-square-foot plant.

Supreme Group India was founded in 1986 by Mohan Kavrie. It makes nonwoven materials for the apparel, automotive, filtration and other industrial sectors with a focus on value-added products.

Supreme officials said the Lexington plant will enable it "to work closely with North American customers and partners on customized material solutions."

"Our decision to establish this facility in North Carolina reflects a long-term commitment to serving the U.S. market with locally manufactured nonwoven materials," said Amit Kavrie, the manufacturer's managing director.

"We see this as an important step in bringing our material technologies and development capabilities closer to customers in the region."

The company said its average annual wage will be $55,800, compared with the Davidson County average of $54,395.

The company has been made eligible for performance-based incentives of up to $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund, which requires matching local incentives.

Lexington has received a $250,000 grant from the N.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority toward the reuse of a Supreme Nonwoven plant. The grant requires Supreme to create at least 34 jobs and spend at least $569,941 on capital investments.

"These new jobs and investments are another example of Davidson County competing on a global stage," said state Rep. Larry Potts, R-Davidson.

"Supreme Nonwovens could have chosen to invest anywhere in the world, and the company's decision to establish roots in Lexington is a strong endorsement of our workforce, our business climate and the collaborative efforts that make projects like this possible."
