Morning Consult released its energy drink survey data, looking not at sales, but the mindset of the consumer. Red Bull and Monster are still the most well-known brands, collectively holding 40% of what it refers to as "mental real estate." But this doesn't necessarily translate to likeability or loyalty.

The consumers who are aware of Alani Nu love it. They convert at a similar rate to Red Bull or Monster. Celsius also performed well in this category. Ironically, Celsius acquired Alani Nu about a year ago, which the average consumer may not be aware of.

According to the survey, the issue with Alani Nu and Celsius is awareness. The appeal is there, and they have a loyal customer base, they just need to get in front of more people. This is likely something that will be solved by time. Both brands are finding their way into more retail outlets like grocery stores and convenience stores. Red Bull and Monster have seemingly been around forever, Alani Nu and Celsius just need time to catch up.

What's interesting is that while the energy drink market skews younger and male, Alani Nu's marketing is clearly female-focused. Their social media posts solely feature women and utilize vibrant, unique color schemes. It will be interesting to see if they make any sort of shift in their marketing, or stick to what has brought them success. Obviously, anyone can drink Alani Nu, but it's clear who they are trying to target.

In the energy drink category, being known and being loved are two different battles. At the moment, no brand is winning both. Red Bull and Monster have the recognition built over decades, but that breadth doesn't guarantee deeper connection. Alani Nu and Celsius have the opposite problem, and arguably the better one to have, since real affinity is harder to manufacture than awareness. As both brands continue expanding into more stores and stay in front of more shoppers, the gap with the category's giants could close faster than people expect.
