High-profile dining corridor planned in Cary lures restaurant from acclaimed Durham chef
M Sushi, regarded as the Triangle’s top sushi restaurant, will join the new Wegman’s-anchored Fenton development in Cary.
With plans to open in 2021, Fenton has so far collected a number of high-profile restaurants. The planned development will include Scott Crawford’s steakhouse Crawford Brothers, Atlanta-based celebrity chef Ford Fry’s Superica and Italian restaurant Colletta from Charleston-based restaurateur Steve Palmer.
M Sushi is the flagship restaurant of Durham chef Michael Lee, who opened the acclaimed sushi bar in 2016. In recent years, he’s also added chicken sandwich and ramen shop M Kokko, the fried tasting menu of M Tempura and the Korean drinking food of M Pocha, all within a couple blocks of each other in the heart of downtown Durham.
“Sushi is my first love and it’s always been my dream to expand my business beyond Durham, so this is a major milestone for M Restaurants and a great opportunity to share my passion with a broader audience of diners,” Lee said in a news release.
“I was immediately drawn to Fenton because of its impressive roster of chefs already on board, including my good friend Scott Crawford. Cary is positioned to become the next hot dining destination in the Triangle, and I’m eager to be part of it.”
Fenton is a mixed-used development plan for a 69-acre tract near the WakeMed Soccer Park. According to a news release, the project’s developers include real estate investment firm Hines, Columbia Development and USAA Real Estate. Fenton will include apartments, office space, retail shops and restaurants.
The Cary location of M Sushi will be significantly larger than the original Durham restaurant, moving into a 4,000 square foot space.
Developers expect Fenton to open in 2021.
