This Durham pizzeria known for Neapolitan-style pies has shut its doors for good.

There’s always sadness when the world loses a pizzeria.

Durham’s Treforni has closed its doors, quietly shutting down its wood-burning ovens last month. The pizzeria owned by David Diggins specialized in quick-cooking Neapolitan style pizza, with blistered, airy crusts. But Treforni also managed to make high quality pizza as approachable as any pizza parlor, offering by-the-slice options for lunch, an open kitchen and a bar in the back of the sizeable South Durham restaurant.

There hasn’t been an announcement from Diggins on the closing of the restaurant, but Treforni’s website has been scrubbed of menus and hours or anything pizza-related, simply saying “Closed” in large black letters. Diggins could not be reached for comment.

In a roundup of Neapolitan-style pizzerias, News & Observer dining critic Greg Cox placed Treforni among the best pizzas in the Triangle. In another story counting the treasures of the Triangle food scene, Cox pointed to the abundance of great local pizza, once again shouting out Treforni.

The pizzeria opened in 2016 in South Durham’s Woodcroft area. The restaurant’s namesake is its three massive wood-burning ovens, with Treforni meaning three ovens in Italian.

In recent weeks, Treforni expanded its offerings, adding a breakfast menu, with sandwiches and traditional early morning fare like eggs and bacon.

For fans of wood-fired pizza, the Triangle is truly overflowing, even with the loss of Treforni. In Durham, Pizzeria Toro is a downtown staple, Napoli has a restaurant food truck hybrid in Carrboro, Pizzeria Faulisi attracts pizza fans to Cary and Ashley Christensen opened Poole’side Pies last summer.
