The owners of City Market Sushi have closed their Korean restaurant in downtown Raleigh

A popular but short-lived Korean restaurant in downtown Raleigh has closed its doors.

Seoul 116 announced over the weekend that it had closed, thanking fans and leaving open the possibility of a return elsewhere. The modern Korean restaurant was owned by brothers Jin and Shin Chang, who also own City Market Sushi in Raleigh.

The owners posted the closing on Facebook and Instagram on Friday, Jan. 31.

“We are sad to announce Seoul 116 will be closing its doors on West st,” the post read. “We thank you for your patronage and look forward to seeing you in future.”

When he reviewed Seoul 116 in 2018, Greg Cox awarded the Korean kitchen and bar three and a half stars, complimenting its classic version of bibimbap, satisfyingly crispy chicken wings, as well as inventive takes on beef tartare and a skillet of gochujang-marinated chicken with melty mozzarella cheese.

Among eye-catching dishes at Seoul 116, fans will remember the Seoul Capris, playful adult versions of Capri Suns, spiked with soju and served in pouches lit with LED ice cubes.

Located at 116 N. West Street, Seoul 116 was close to the heart of the Raleigh nightlife district on Glenwood Avenue, but missed out on regular foot traffic. It’s dining room and patio in Powerhouse Square often meant a special trip for diners.
