‘Green growth’ on food at Cary restaurant: Triangle sanitation scores (May 16)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of May 10-16.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 74 restaurant inspections were completed between May 10 and May 16.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Shanghai Alley (1148 Kildaire Farm Rd. in Cary) received a score of 89% during an inspection on May 15

  • The restaurant was in violation of 11 standards. Of these, five were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included a large container of “unknown cooked sauce with green growth on the top” in the walk-in cooler, knives with debris stored as clean and various food (including open milk, cooked chicken and cooked sauces) without markings in walk-in and prep coolers.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 93% in March 2023 and 93.5% in October 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows that 16 restaurant inspections were completed between May 10 and May 16.

Most restaurants received an A grade.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Glasshouse Kitchen (5 Laboratory Dr. in Durham) received a score of 86.5% during an inspection on May 10.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 17 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included par-cooked chicken roulade in the walk-in cooler stored with raw pork, multiple food items held above the standard 41 degrees F on the make line, and sanitizer bucket and cleaners stored in the same pan as a large container of chili oil.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 90% in February 2023 and 96% in October 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that one restaurant inspection was completed between May 10 and May 16.

All restaurants received an A grade.

No restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Johnston County sanitation scores

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 15 restaurant inspections were completed between May 10 and May 16.

All restaurants received an A grade.

No restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Chatham County sanitation scores

The Chatham County inspections management system shows that two restaurant inspections were completed between May 10 and May 16.

All restaurants received an A grade.

No restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.
