‘B’ grades at seafood and Italian restaurants in Wake Co.: Sanitation scores (June 20)
The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.
You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.
Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of June 14-20.
Wake County sanitation scores
The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that at least 100 restaurant inspections were completed June 14-20.
▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
▪ Three restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
Jack’s Seafood Restaurant (1516 New Bern Ave. in Raleigh) received a score of 82% during an inspection on June 14.
The restaurant was in violation of 22 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included an employee handling raw sausage, taking off his gloves to put on new gloves and not washing his hands. Violations also included storing dishes as clean that still had food debris on them and foods held at improper temperatures.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
- The restaurant previously scored 93.5% in March 2023 and 93.5% in December 2022.
Mario Deli & Grill (2317 Eagle Rock Rd. in Wendell) received a score of 87% during an inspection on June 15.
The restaurant was in violation of 15 standards. Of these, six were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included storing raw meat above read-to-eat vegetables and storing foods at improper temperatures.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
- The restaurant previously scored 91.5% in February 2023 and 90.5% in September 2022.
Pizzeria Veritas (1260 NW Maynard Rd. in Cary) received a score of 82% during an inspection on June 14.
The restaurant was in violation of 16 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included keeping ingredients such as mozzarella, roast beef and marinara sauce beyond seven days and placing too many pizzas on one rack at a time for cooling.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
- The restaurant previously scored 95% in January 2023 and 94% in August 2022.
▪ No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.
▪ No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores
The Durham County inspection management system shows 14 restaurant inspections were completed June 14-20.
