This Raleigh steakhouse is one of the South’s ‘Most Legendary,’ says Southern Living

A fixture for Raleigh foodies and a destination for diners celebrating emotional milestones has been named one of the South’s Most Legendary steakhouses by Southern Living magazine.

Angus Barn took the 20th-best slot among 30 restaurants in 14 Southern states where beef-lovers find their bliss. The magazine was looking for steakhouses “that serve up delicious nostalgia alongside their perfectly pink filets.”

Southern Living said this about the restaurant started 63 years ago by Thad Eure, Jr. and Charles Winston:

“This sprawling campus started with a simple red barn restaurant in 1960. Today, Angus Barn’s operations have expanded to include a Wild Turkey lounge, smoking lounge, banquet rooms, and two private dining venues. One thing that hasn’t changed? The quality of the food. Choose from a bone-in, classic, or specialty cut. The $109 42-ounce tomahawk is a great option if you’ve got someone to share with. Every meal is served with a choice of salad or soup, plus a side, and homemade bread.”

The Beef ‘n Bottle in Charlotte and the menu-less Beefmastor Inn in Wilson also made the list, at 26 and 29, respectively. The No. 1 spot was taken by a Memphis steakhouse called Folk’s Folly.

Southern Living has toasted Angus Barn before, naming it North Carolina’s Best Local Restaurant in March based on results from its annual Best in the South readers’ poll.

Readers said they appreciated the Barn’s expansive selection of steaks and distinctive sauces.

The restaurant is now owned and operated by Thad Eure Jr.’s daughter Van Eure and her husband, Steve Thanhauser. Chef Walter Royal led the Angus Barn’s kitchen for more than 28 years before his death earlier this year.
