Rotting food, trash in sink in Durham restaurant: Triangle sanitation scores (Aug. 2)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of July 26 to Aug. 1.

Wake County sanitation scores

A Wake County spokesperson provided the following information for restaurant inspections completed July 26 to Aug. 1.

184 food establishments received an A grade.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%

Wing Stop #1542 (51 Cabela Dr. in Garner) received a score of 86.5% during an inspection on July 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 14 standards. Of these, three were considered “priority” violations.
  • Critical violations included finding “several flies” at the rear of the prep kitchen and the dining room area, a box of corn on the floor and “sticky build-up on mulitple pans stored as clean.”
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
  • The restaurant previously scored 92.5% in December 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows 41 restaurant inspections were completed July 26 to Aug. 1.

Most restaurants received an A grade.

Two restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Asian Kitchen (1125 NC 54 Hwy in Durham) received a score of 88.5% during an inspection on Aug. 1.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 17 standards. Of these, four were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included holding ready-to-eat foods at improper temperatures and failing to have hot water at handwashing sinks.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 98% in January 2023 and 98% in August 2022.

Tony Romas (151 Tatum Dr. in Durham) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on July 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 18 standards. Of these, seven were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included having a “large container of rotting red onions” in the storage area, using handwashing sinks as “dump sinks” with eggs and trash inside the sinks and keeping raw meat and poultry at improper temperatures.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 98% in May 2023 and 96% in November 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that no restaurant inspections were July 26 to Aug. 1.

Johnston County sanitation scores

A Johnston County spokesperson provided the following information for restaurant inspections completed July 26 to Aug. 1.

All 14 restaurants received an A grade.

The Chatham County inspections management system shows that that three restaurant inspections were completed July 26 to Aug. 1
