‘B’ grades at Cuban, Indian and pizza restaurants in Wake: Sanitation scores (Aug. 22)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of Aug. 16-22.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 82 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 16-22.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Three restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Benny Capitale’s (121-110 Fayetteville St. in Raleigh) received a score of 83.5% during an inspection on Aug. 21.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 27 standards. Of these, 11 were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included missing dates on “refrigerated, ready-to-eat, potentially hazardous food” and “sharply dented cans” in storage, which could include damaged, spoiled or recalled products. These items should be held in designated areas that are separated from food, equipment and other needs.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 92.5% in October 2022 and 90.5% in February 2022.

Casa Cubana Restaurant & Rum Bar (10901 Forest Pines Drive in Raleigh) received a score of 86% during an inspection on Aug. 18.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 26 standards. Of these, 10 were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included finding past-date empanadas in storage and ready-to-eat foods stored at improper temperatures.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 88% in May 2023.

Chutneys (4121 Davis Drive in Morrisville) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Aug. 16. The restaurant received a 94% during a re-inspection on Aug. 21.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards. Of these, six were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included finding “Raid insect killer in the mop sink area,” several items in the walk-in cooler without marked dates and dirty knives stored as clean.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 90% in May 2023 and 93% in December 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows 24 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 16-22.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that 19 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 16-22.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Johnston County sanitation scores

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 12 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 16-22.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Chatham County sanitation scores

The Chatham County inspections management system shows that that four restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 16-22.

Most restaurants received an A grade.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Dry Dock Seafood Restaurant (408 N. Second Ave. in Siler City) received a score of 84.5% during an inspection on Aug. 16.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 18 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included finding two containers of sliced deli meat in the reach-in cooler without date markings and an employee dispensing cole slaw with only one glove.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 97% in June 2023 and 96% in March 2023.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.
