Celebrated downtown restaurant earns ‘B’ grade: Triangle sanitation scores (Sept. 5)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 44 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Bida Manda (222 S Blount St. in Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on Aug. 30.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 15 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included observing “chicken bundles, noodles and rice cooked on previous days” held at improper temperatures in the walk-in cooler, misdated and improperly labeled food items and dirty spatulas stored as clean.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 92.5% in April 2023 and 97.5% in December 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows 24 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

Most restaurants received an A grade.

Two restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Church’s Chicken (942 N Miami Blvd in Durham) received a score of 87% during an inspection on Aug. 30.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 10 standards. Of these, four were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included observing pans and kitchen utensils stored as clean with “excessive food debris on them,” prompting recommendations of “excess cleaning needed of all cooking equipment throughout the facility.”

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 83.5% in March 2023 and 85% in January 2023.

Spring Rolls (701-102 W Main St. in Durham) received a score of 87% during an inspection on Aug. 30.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 13 standards. Of these, five were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included storing foods at improper temperatures.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 93% both in June and March 2023.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that 10 restaurant inspections were Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Johnston County sanitation scores

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 12 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Chatham County sanitation scores

The Chatham County inspections management system shows that that two restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

One restaurant received an A grade.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

The City Tap (89 Hillsboruugh St. in Pittsboro) received a score of 89.5% during an inspection on Aug. 31.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 10 standards. Of these, seven were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included observing dented cans on storage shelves and foods stored at improper temperatures.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 100% in March 2023 and 87% in October 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.
