If you’re only going to Italy for gelato, a Cary sweet shop may save you a trip.

This week, Geluna Gelato in downtown Cary was named the best gelato outside of Italy. Or rather, the best gelato in the whole world that’s not in Italy.

The gelato crown was handed down by Southern foodie magazine The Local Palate, which featured Geluna in its summer 2026 issue.

“This is the real deal, creamy and intensely flavored, made with Homeland dairy products using techniques that would make any Italian nonna proud,” The Local Palate wrote about Geluna Gelato.

Geluna opened in downtown Cary in 2022, in the small enclave that includes Hank’s Downtown Dive, Di Fara Pizza and Taipai 101.

The gelateria is owned by Diana Diaz and Warwick Sheehan, who trained at the Carpigiani’s Gelato University in Bologna before opening their own shop, according to Geluna’s website.

In their shout out, The Local Palate said the must-try flavors are stracciatella and sea-salt caramel. But Geluna also specializes in seasonal North Carolina flavors. The specials now include a strawberry lime sorbet and honey lavender.

Beyond their downtown Cary scoop shop, Geluna is also on the menu at LaGana in Raleigh, Wedgewood Cheese Bar in Carrboro and Il Falo in Brier Creek.

Geluna Gelato is located at 111 E Chatham St. in Cary. See all flavors at gelunagelato.com.
