A popular family of Mexican restaurants is expanding with its first new upscale concept.

The new Cabo Mexican Cuisine opened this week in Brier Creek, taking over the former Applebee’s at 8701 Brier Creek Pkwy in Raleigh.

Cabo Mexican Cuisine is a new concept from the Torres family of Mexican restaurants, which owns five El Tapatio locations in the Triangle and Eastern North Carolina. The new Cabo Mexican is a major departure from El Tapatio, serving an upscale menu of coastal Mexican dishes and high-end proteins like steak and lobster.

Cabo is operated by El Tapatio owner Alvaro Torres, and the former space is unrecognizable. It may have been built in an Applebee’s — but it’s not giving Applebee’s. The new Cabo has a bright dining room with leather banquettes, a marble bar and greenery hanging from the ceiling.

Cabo menu

On the menu you’ll find ceviche, authentic trompito al pastor and bone marrow tacos, alongside familiar dishes like enchiladas, burritos and arroz con pollo.

Cabo has a full bar with beer, wine and cocktails, including a dozen different kinds of margaritas and shareable towers.

With Cabo, the Torres family is building on a trend the Triangle has enjoyed for more than a decade, of popular classic North Carolina-style Mexican restaurants leading to more modern concepts like Jose & Sons, La Buena Vida and Little Bull.

Cabo Mexican Cuisine is open daily for lunch and dinner.
