Upcoming plant sales, giveaway
Each of the Triangle’s major gardens is hosting a fall plant sale or giveaway. Here are the details on each:
▪ Durham’s Sarah P. Duke Gardens is doing something different this year with its annual plant sale. It is selling a “pollinator garden in a box.” Each box includes six nectar or host plants selected by the gardens’ horticulture staff. The cost is $40 plus tax. Boxes have to be preordered by noon Sept. 19 and be picked up 8-10 a.m. Sept. 24. To preorder, go to http://gardens.duke.edu/pollinatorbox. The plant sale is open to the public 8 a.m.-noon Sept. 24.
The Duke Gardens is at 420 Anderson St., Durham, 919-684-3698, http://gardens.duke.edu.
▪ Chapel Hill’s N.C. Botanical Garden is hosting its annual fall plant sale and festival on Sept. 23 and Sept. 24.
Members can shop 5-7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 to buy native perennial wildflowers, vines, shrubs and trees, as well as seeds. You can become a member beforehand or that night. Individual memberships cost $50, family memberships cost $75. The sale is open to nonmembers 9 a.m.- noon Sept. 24.
Members receive a 10 percent discount both days.
The garden is at 100 Old Mason Farm Road, Chapel Hill, 919-962-0522, ncbg.unc.edu.
▪ Raleigh’s JC Raulston Arboretum is hosting its Friends of the Arboretum Annual Plant Distribution 9 a.m.-9:15 a.m. Oct. 1. This is not a sale. The arboretum gives away thousands of plants, including rare ones, for free. It is open only to members.
The plants up for grabs are set out in a field. At 9 a.m. sharp, everyone lines up near the plants they hope to take home, a horn blares and everyone dashes to grab a couple of plants. The procedure repeats several more times until all the plants are gone. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m.
You have to be an arboretum member. Individual membership costs $50 and gets one person into the plant distribution. Family memberships cost $75 and offer two admissions. People can sign up for memberships on the day of the plant distribution.
The arboretum is at 4415 Beryl Road, Raleigh, 919-515-3132, jcra.ncsu.edu.
