Favorite things: A story inspires a beloved painting
My dad loved to tell stories about his youth in Cornelius, N.C., to his grandsons. One of their favorite stories was about keeping the homemade baseball (string wrapped around a rock) away from the cow in the pasture where my dad, his cousins and friends played baseball. When my dad got very sick with cancer, one of his grandsons painted a picture of that cow with the baseball in her mouth. It made my dad so happy. It was the only personal item he wanted in his room during his last days. It’s a family treasure now.
