Tomato Day

Backyard Birding: Baby, It’s Hot Outside!

In this birding class we will discuss water needs for birds and different water features you can add to your gardens. We’ll also discuss how fruit and veggie scraps from the kitchen can benefit birds. Each individual will receive a small piece of pond liner and instructions for creating a small “watering hole” for birds, butterflies, toads and other small animals. 10-11 a.m. July 11. $10. Dragonflies for Beginners

Join a park ranger to learn how to identify dragonflies. A short hike to a storm water runoff basin to observe dragonflies in their native habitat will follow the discussion. Binoculars are a must. We do have a limited supply available to loan. Dress appropriately for the weather, bring hiking shoes or boots, and insect repellent. 2-3 p.m. July 11. Free. William B. Landscape Potential I: Approaches to Design

Consider the performance of your home landscape. Would you describe it as a fit, functional work of art that reflects your lifestyle and encourages outdoor activity? If not, join Raleigh-based landscape designer Preston Montague for a design course series that will help you revise and reboot your outdoor space. This two-part course begins with an introduction to landscape design full of tips and tactics that will empower anyone to go home and begin designing immediately.The practicum portion of this event is scheduled on July 25 and July 26. Drawing in Nature I: Botanical Illustration with Pencil and Pen

Botanical illustration is a powerful tool for understanding and communicating nature’s design. Drawing in Nature I introduces participants to basic observation and drawing techniques. Designed for enthusiasts with little to no artistic training, this foundation course focuses on pencil and pen to create accurate and beautiful botanical illustrations in black and white. 9 a.m. July 11. $120-$150. U-Pick Grand Opening Event

During its grand opening, Cedar Grove Blueberry Farm hopes to donate 250 pounds of fruit to feed children who are at risk for hunger in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Event includes an old-fashioned pig pickin’, music, yard games, fishing in the pond and micro-press juicer. Food, drink and prepicked blueberries are also available. Noon-4 p.m. July 12. Free. Nature Adventures Camp: Animals in the Gardens

Prowl around the gardens looking high and low to discover the animals that live here. From birds in the trees to life underground, we will look at different habitats each week.
