Persimmon festival, Home Depot workshops and Chapel Hill gardening classes
Colfax’s 8th annual Persimmon Festival
The eighth annual Colfax Persimmon Festival will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 7.
The event celebrates the persimmon and historic farming with persimmon products for sale, talks on persimmon history, food vendors, live music, arts and crafts, vintage car show, children’s activities and more.
The festival is held at Historic Stafford Farm, which is west of Greensboro in Guilford County. The farm is at 558 N. Bunker Hill Road, Oak Ridge.
The cost is $7; free for children 12 and younger. The Oasis Shriners coordinate off-site parking at $5 per car with shuttles to and from the festival site.

Home Depot offers DIY classes
The home improvement store chain offers free workshops each weekend. Here is a sample of upcoming workshops at Wake County stores:
Build a Christmas Tree Card Holder, 10-11:30 a.m. Nov. 14; Interior Paint and Drywall Repair, 1-2:30 p.m. Nov. 15; Create a Triple Hanging Holiday Wreath, 10-11:30 a.m. Nov. 21; Learn to Install Tile Flooring, 10-11:30 a.m. Nov. 22.
They also offer do-it-herself workshops for women: Build a Wooden Stocking Hanger, 6:30-8 p.m. Nov. 19.
And they offer children’s workshops: Build a Veterans Day Jet, 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 7; and Build a School House Bank, 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 28.

Classes at N.C. Botanical Garden
Here are a few upcoming classes at the N.C. Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill:
▪ A series of classes on soil ecology will cover an overview of soil types, a study of typical Piedmont soils and their properties. The classes are 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 3-24. Cost: $130 or $117 for members.
▪ Family Gardening Workshop: Ready for Winter will share how to put a vegetable garden to bed. An adult is required to attend with a child. The class is 10-11:15 a.m. Nov. 14. Cost: $10 or $8 for members.
▪ Owl Prowl, 7-9 p.m. Nov. 20. Join Gail Abrams, executive director of Piedmont Wildlife Center, on a trip to the Mason Farm Biological Reserve to listen and look for signs of screech, barred and great horned owls. After searching for owls in the wild, attendees will get to meet an eastern screech owl, barred owl and great horned owl up close. Cost: $15 or $10 for members.
The garden is at 100 Old Mason Farm Road, Chapel Hill.
