Lanterns to light the way

These lanterns were used by Bill Umscheid’s grandfather in the early 1900s to put on fence posts he had placed down the the middle of the dirt road that ran along a quarter mile of the farm.

The lanterns were placed every night at dusk so horses and buggies going by would see the fence in the middle of the road.
