While most of us use pen and paper every day despite the ubiquity of our phones and keyboards, it may have been awhile since we used them to draw. No matter if you’re wanting to turn your stick figures into something more closely resembling humans or are already a wiz, these classes will get you up to speed and back in action. These Triangle studios and teachers are ready to teach and hone drawing skills for artists of all ages.

Artspace

Artspace offers classes in a wide range of creative mediums for individuals of all ages and artists of all levels. Summer classes include: Urban Sketching for Adults with Scott Renk, 6-9 p.m. Mondays (July 11-Aug. 1), $200; Portraiture in Oils with Stephan Cefalo, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays (July 11-Aug. 1), $200; Dynamic Figure Drawing with Scott Renk, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesdays (July 13-Aug. 3), $200; Drawing: Anatomy for Artists with Stephan Cefalo, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Fridays (July 15-Aug. 5), $200. For members, these classes are $180. For ages 7-10, Nature Sketchbook, 1-4 p.m. July 25-29, $140. For ages 11-16, Drawing: Put It in Perspective, 9 a.m.-noon July 11-15, $140; Drawing Techniques I, 1-4 p.m. July 18-22, $140; and Urban Sketching I, 9 a.m.-noon July 25-29, $140. For members, the classes cost $125.

Jerry’s Artarama

Jerry’s offers low-cost art supplies for fine artists. All classes are taught by local and regional artists; maximum class size is 16, and classes usually average eight. Upcoming classes include: Introduction to Zentangle with Cathy Boytos, 1:30-4:30 p.m. June 11, $60; Zen-Gems with Colored Pencils with Cathy Boytos, 1:30-4:30 p.m. July 9, $60; and Intro to Drawing with Dan Nelson, 5-8 p.m. Aug. 4, $60.

Lucy Gardiner

Lucy Gardiner offers individualized classes in a group setting and instructs students in a variety of styles. Enrolling now for 8- or 10-week summer sessions for ages 5-15, $175-$240 (prices depend on age and length of class), 1- to 1.5-hour weekly sessions. Also 3-day mini-camps for ages 10-16, three 3-hour classes, $150/week. Instruction is ongoing for ages 16 and up, 2-hour weekly classes, $100/month with one-time materials fee of $25.

Sertoma Arts Center

Sertoma Arts Center, run by the city of Raleigh, is open to people of all ages and skill levels for classes in drawing and other mediums. Summer classes include: Drawing for Fun, 6:30-9 p.m. June 8, $60; Drawing: The ABCs of Hand Lettering, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. July 16, $60; Zentangle (workshop) for Beginners, 6:30-9 p.m. June 22, $25; Make Your Own Coloring Pages (And Color!), 10 a.m.-1 p.m. July 9, $60; Zentangle for Beginners, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturdays (July 16-Aug. 20), $84.

Susan Soper

Susan Soper offers beginning drawing and contour drawing to individuals in high school or older. She also teaches drawing with ink (working with ink and brush/ink and pen) and drawing with expression. She offers private drawing lessons for $25/hour with students bringing their own supplies. She will teach classes at Pullen Arts Center in September.

Vinita Jain

Vinita Jain offers drawing classes in pencil, charcoal and pastel for ages 7 and up. She is enrolling students for A Week of Full Color, Kids Summer Art Camp, 9 a.m.-noon June 20-24, ages 7-15, $135 including materials. She is also enrolling for weekend classes August-December, 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. Saturday-Sunday, 12-session classes for ages 7-15, $220 including materials. Adult classes are 12:30-2 p.m. Thursdays, $100 for five classes including materials.

Cary Arts Center

The Artful Mind

The Artful Mind works to improve children’s confidence through creativity and specializes in teaching different mediums to small classes that are individualized to each group. It offers bi-weekly drawing clubs 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fridays with changing themes for ages 7 and up, $15/week. The first and third Fridays are for girls and the second and fourth Fridays are for boys. Each week students make an artist trading card to exchange at the end of the class. They also offer an advanced anime drawing class 6:30-8 p.m Thursdays for ages 10 and up, $15.

Young Rembrandts-Raleigh

Young Rembrandts teaches children ages 5-12 basic drawing skills. Students learn art vocabulary, color theory and art history. During the school year, it partners with several schools in Wake, Johnston and Franklin counties. Durham Arts Council

The Durham Arts Council offers visual and performing arts classes for youth and adults, including weekend workshops and summer camps. Summer classes include: Basic Drawing, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays (June 14-July 26), $126; Teen Intensive: Drawing, 1-4 p.m. July 25-29, $110; Cartoon Sketching: Anime and Manga Characters and Creatures (ages 5-12), 5:30-7:15 p.m. Wednesdays (June 8-22 and July 6-20), $47.

Young Rembrandts-Durham

Young Rembrandts offers beginning drawing classes for ages 5-12, teaching how to look a large object and break it down into basic shapes. During the school year, they go into schools in Durham, Chapel Hill and Wake school districts to teach. They are enrolling for summer camps at Creekside Elementary and Mathnasium in Durham. The camps feature weeklong half-day classes either 8 a.m.-noon or 12:30-4:30 p.m. June 20-Aug. 12, $80.
