8-year-old organizes Howl-A-Ween Dog Adoption Event
8-year-old Abigail Narducci of Cary spent a couple of months collecting yard sale items from her neighbors this summer and then sold them to raise money for the Holly Springs dog rescue group, Pawfect Match Rescue and Rehabilitation. Abigail raised $339 with her sale, but she isn’t stopping there. She has also organized an upcoming neighborhood adoption event so people can meet some of the puppies and dogs Pawfect Match has available.
“She wants to help as many homeless dogs as possible find loving homes in Wake County,” said Abigail’s mother, Amy Narducci.
Abigail’s “Howl-A-Ween Dog Adoption Event” takes place 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 31 at the Park At West Lake neighborhood in Apex (5149 Moneta Lane). Dogs of all breeds and ages will be present. There will be T-shirts and ice cream for sale, and all proceeds go to the rescue group. Pawfect Match will also accept items from its Amazon Wish List at the event (nando.com/2gn), from anyone who’d like to make a donation that way.
Abigail’s mother said her daughter’s passion for helping rescue groups started last fall when she organized a neighborhood collection of items for the Wake County Animal Center. Abigail, who has two rescue dogs, was able to fill the back of a van with dog beds, blankets, food, toys and more that she collected on her own.
Dog Day 5K
Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue is hosting the 2nd Dog Day 5K to benefit shelters and rescues in eastern North Carolina. The run takes place at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Lake Benson Park in Garner. This 5K is unique because all of the profits are given to to some of the neediest rescues and shelters in the state to supplement their funding. Money from last year’s run paid for supplies like towels, bedding, bowls, crates and collars, as well as food, toys, flea and tick control and heartworm tests. Get more info at goldenrescuenc.org.
Track your cat
Ever wonder what your outside cat is up to when he’s roaming? Maybe you can find out. Learn more about N.C. State’s Cat Tracker program from university and N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences researchers. Cat Tracker uses GPS technology to collect data on where cats go, what they eat, and what microbes they bring back to their homes. At the event, you can find out if you and your cats can participate in the program.
The session takes place Sunday, Oct. 25, 3-4 p.m. at Cameron Village Regional Library (1930 Clark Ave.) in Raleigh.

Lil BUB in town
If you’ve been anywhere near the Internet in the past couple of years you’ve no doubt seen Lil BUB, an unbelievably popular – and cute – little kitty owned by Mike Bridavsky. In addition to millions and millions of Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Tumblr views, Lil BUB has starred in cable TV specials and a documentary and is the subject of a book.
You can see Lil BUB and Bridavsky in the flesh (and fur) during an event at the James B. Hunt Jr. Library on Oct. 26.
“A Life-Changing Cat: Mike Bridavsky and Lil BUB,” which runs 7-8 p.m., is free and open to the public, but ticket reservations are required. Reserve here: nando.com/2gp.
The library will also hold a pet food drive for SAFE Haven Cat Shelter & Clinic that evening, so be sure to bring a little something for them.
Note: This event will not include a signing line or one-on-one photos with Lil BUB.
Unchain dogs
The Coalition to Unchain Dogs is hosting its first Barktoberfest on Oct. 31 from 2-5 p.m. at Durham Central Park. It’s a great event for dogs and their people, with contests, games, food and beer from local businesses, plus vendors and a raffle. The contests include Best Pet Costume, Best Pet Trick, Pet/Human Kissing contest and a Pet/Human Look-alike contest. All the money raised goes to help pets living in underserved communities.
The group is also holding its annual Music for Fences concert soon. That happens Nov. 14 at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro. Performers include I Was Totally Destroying It, The Backsliders, Kamara Thomas & The Night Drivers, It’s Snakes! (featuring Hope Nicholls and Aaron Pitkin of Fetchin’ Bones), OG Merge, a spoken word performance by Brandon Lamarr Basile, and special entertainment by The Bouncing Bulldogs. Doors open at 4 p.m. and music starts at 5.
