Winners of the N&O’s 2015 Pet Halloween Costume Contest
When we first decided to have a contest for pets in Halloween costumes, we didn’t think it would be so hard to pick the winners. We got so many amazing entries, with nearly every dog, cat, guinea pig, turtle or horse cuter than the next. We loved the handmade outfits as much as the store-bought ones, the superheroes as much as the princesses. And we decided that people who really love their pets are just the best.
Our top three winners (and boy, it was tough!) each get a gift card to locally owned and operated Phydeaux pet shop (phydeauxpets.com), which has locations in Raleigh, Cary and Chapel Hill. We hope all the winners get to pick out their favorite treats or a new toy. They’ll also get a visit from N&O staff photographer Juli Leonard, who will take a pet portrait sure to make its way onto a Christmas card or two.
A sincere thank you to each and every person who entered.

Keep pet’s safety in mind
Dressing pets in costumes can be fun for the owners, but make sure it’s also fun – or at least not stressful – to your pet. If they don’t enjoy the process, it’s best to skip it.
If you do choose to dress up your pet, the American Society for the Protection of Animals instructs pet owners to make sure the costumes don’t constrict the animal’s movement or hearing, or impede the pet’s ability to breathe freely, bark or meow. Also make sure it doesn’t have any small parts that could become choking hazards.
