Raleigh TICA club holds cat show

Raleigh now has its own branch of TICA (The International Cat Association), called It’s TICA Time. The club will hold a cat show this weekend at the Holshauser Building on the N.C. State Fairgrounds.

At the show, you can see Potter, the top Maine Coon alter (spayed/neutered cat) in the world, as well as a large variety of Bengal cats, Persians, Ragdolls, Oriental Shorthairs, domestic household cats and others. You can also talk to one of the local cat rescue groups in attendance, should you be interested in adopting, and check out a number of vendors selling cat items.

The hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 20-21) and admission is $5. If you bring a can or bag of cat food for donation to the pet food pantries at SAFE Haven for Cats (Raleigh) or Princeton’s Meow (Concord), you’ll get $1 off admission.

Pet loss support group

The SPCA Pet Loss Support group offers a space for sharing with others who have experienced the loss of a pet. The free meetings, facilitated by Rob Gierka, a non-denominational chaplain (rob@gierka.com), take place the first and third Sundays of most months. The next one is 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 at the SPCA of Wake County (200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh).

Rabbit Day 2016

February is “Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month” and there’s a special Rabbit Day adoption and education event coming up at AniMall in Cary.

There will be displays and demonstrations on topics regarding rabbits as indoor pets, plus a number of local rescue groups will bring adoptable rabbits. The sponsoring group, The Triangle Rabbits, will also raise funds to benefit rabbit rescue.

Rabbit Day 2016 takes place 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 27 at AniMall, located at 1105 Walnut St., Cary.

Volunteer at cat adoptions

Alley Cats & Angels, a Triangle-based all-volunteer cat rescue group, is in need of volunteers to assist with weekend adoption events at PetSmart stores in Knightdale and Morrisville.

Adoption Assistant responsibilities include facilitating meetings with potential adopters; assisting with setting up and breaking down cages at events and cleaning adoption center. Assistants can also train to lead adoptions, which includes reviewing applications and pre-adoption counseling.

Lil Bub app aids ASPCA

Our favorite celebrity kitty, Lil BUB, has released a new mobile game app and a portion of the proceeds go to BUB’s favorite charity, the ASPCA.

In the InstaKitty 3D game, which was developed by HappyGiant, you can play with, feed and care for an animated Lil BUB. The virtual kitty has real “BUB sounds” and mannerisms.

The initial download is free, but there are in-app purchases, which benefit animals with special needs through the Lil BUB’s Big Fund for the ASPCA. The game is available now for iOS and coming soon for Android.

Save the date

The SAFE Haven Tuxedo Cat Ball is coming up in April, and it’s not too early to reserve your tickets. In fact, “early bird” ticket buyers (purchase by March 1) are entered in a raffle for a $50 Visa gift card. Early bird ticket prices are $60. After March 1, tickets are $100 per person or $160 per couple. Or you can purchase a whole or half table and get reserved seating for the entire evening.

The event includes food, champagne and a silent auction. It takes place at 7 p.m. on April 15 at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh. Get more info at safehavenforcats.org.
