This Chia Seed Lemonade Can Curb Cravings + Boost Weight Loss!
Can a refreshing summer drink make it easier to lose weight? Fans of TikTok’s viral chia lemonade insist it can. And experts agree, confirming that the stuff—made by swirling chia seeds, lemon juice and optional sweetener in ice water—offers serious advantages for weight loss and wellbeing. “Chia lemonade is the little secret weapon you didn’t know your body needed,” says Bob Arnot, MD, former chief medical correspondent for NBC News and author of a book on chia called The Aztec Diet.
Dr. Arnot personally used chia-spiked drinks to drop 20 pounds. “It was the easiest weight loss I’ve ever experienced,” he says, noting the seeds were prized by Aztec warriors because such a small amount kept them full and energized for up to 48 hours. “I had no hunger or cravings. I felt great!” Keep reading to discover more reasons to drink chia seed lemonade for weight loss—and how it can help transform your health, too.
How chia seed lemonade boosts weight loss
All the ingredients in the viral beverage have a role to play. Let’s start with the sugar substitute. Dr. Arnot is a fan of using monk fruit or allulose, which make the drink sweet like classic lemonade without raising blood sugar or harming beneficial gut bacteria.
Then there’s fresh-squeezed lemon, which adds craveable flavor and vitamin C, a nutrient associated with 323 percent faster fat burning.
Water itself has slimming and hydrating superpowers, proven to keep hunger down and metabolism up while also improving digestion, brain function and more. (Learn how much water you need to drink to lose weight here.)
And yet chia is still the star of the beverage. Chia seeds are tiny black or white seeds that are high in fiber and boast anti-inflammatory properties. When mixed with a liquid like lemonade, they have a gel-like consistency. “Chia isn’t a magic bullet, but, as part of a healthy lifestyle, it can be the fairy dust that makes all the difference,” says Dr. Arnot. Here are a few reasons why.
It curbs hunger
Stir chia into lemonade and it rapidly absorbs the liquid, “expanding to seven times its size,” says Dr. Arnot. He notes that the 1 to 2 tablespoons of seeds added to the drink take up a lot of space, making your stomach feel smaller, just as it would after lap-band surgery.
But that’s not all. As the seeds swell with liquid, they release soluble fiber that becomes a thick gel that literally prevents food leaving your GI tract for hours. “You can have a scoop of chia at 8 am and not feel another hunger pang all day,” says the doc.
It blocks sugar spikes
Enjoy chia lemonade with breakfast, and there’s evidence the thick gel created in your stomach will slow the rate at which any carbs you eat can be turned into blood sugar. In fact, a recent study in the Journal of Surgery and Medicine found that chia kept blood-sugar significantly lower and steadier, even when eaten with cake.
That means consuming chia seeds helps prevent rollercoaster blood sugar that can trigger cravings and hormonal imbalances that stall fat burning. Dr. Arnot adds that stabilizing blood sugar levels is also linked to reduced diabetes risk and countless other health benefits.
It reduces inflammation
Chia seeds may be tiny, but they still boast an exceptionally high concentration of nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and antioxidants. Backed by a Journal of Nutritional Science study, Dr. Arnot says these nutrients “act like fire extinguishers” to put out the chronic inflammation that burns inside many of us (caused by everything from processed food and stress to air pollution).
Chronically-inflamed tissues release compounds that block weight loss and put stress on various body systems. So as inflammation drops, you shed pounds far more easily and you heal from head to toe.
