Alexander County car crash claims life of Taylorsville man along Rink Dam Road

A Taylorsville man died in a single-vehicle crash along Rink Dam Road in Alexander County on Thursday.

Peter Joseph Gardner, 66, died at the scene of the crash, N.C. State Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Jake Macchia said in a news release.

The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. near Wittenburg Springs Drive along Rink Dam Road. Gardner was driving a 2017 Dodge Durango, Macchia said.

Gardner drove off the right side of the road and then hit a mailbox and a tree, Macchia said.

Macchia said witnesses told state troopers that Gardner possibly had a medical condition prior to the wreck.
