Heres where to find local strawberries this season
Strawberry Season got a bit of an early start this year. Most area farms were open by Tax Day, April 15, and they are heading into peak production this week with ample supplies across the Triad.
The fungal outbreak that affected supplies – and even completely shut down a few farms – last year is not a problem this year.
Prices are mostly holding steady compared to last year, with U-pick averaging $18 a gallon and pre-picked berries averaging $20.
Note that not all farms offer U-pick these days. And even the ones that do sometimes limit picking to a few days a week.
So check with farms the day you plan to go to make sure they have ripe berries available. Busy farms often get picked clean on certain days, particularly on weekends, and may need a couple days to recover – or rather let more berries ripen on the plants.
Credit cards and checks are accepted at many places, and Venmo is gaining in popularity, but some farms accept only cash
Facebook remains the best and quickest way to check on availability and hours, which tend to change daily. When a farm is open, it's usually best to go early.
