Pruitt, Redmon among those spring athletes honored by Mid-State Conference (copy)
Rockingham County's Ava Grace Pruitt and McMichael's Lindsay Redmon were among the spring sports award winners announced on Friday by the Mid-State 3A/4A/5A Conference.
Pruitt, a UNC-Chapel Hill signee, won Softball Player of the Year after going 16-3 with an 0.74 ERA, while batting .393 for the Lady Cougars, who finished second in the conference at 8-2, went 16-5 overall and reached the third round in the 5A playoffs.
Redmon won Pitcher of the Year honors as her teams competed for a state championship this weekend. Entering the series against West Wilkes, she had a 20-0 record with a 1.14 ERA, 202 strikeouts and 24 walks in 148 innings pitched. The Phoenix had compiled a 24-4 record, which includes winnng the conference regular season title at 9-1. Redmon also entered the state finals batting .471 with 10 home runs.
Morehead's Zach Grogan received Baseball Player of the Year honors after batting .446 with six doubles and 31 RBIs, while also being 6-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 49 innings pitched for the Panthers, who went 17-10 overall, third in the conference at 6-4 and reached the 4A third round.
The Pitcher of the Year was McMichael's Eli Gann, who went 7-1 with a 1.56 ERA with 53 strikeouts and 14 walks. McGann batted .390 with a school-record 38 RBIs for the Phoenix, who went 20-6 overall, won the conference at 9-1 and reached the 3A third round.
