Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center to reopen on June 19
After almost two months of renovations, a public library in East Winston reopened on Friday.
Renovations to the Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center included new signs, outdoor lights, a new coat of paint, new carpet, a new shelving system for the children's collection and an improved Wi-Fi connection, according to Nicole Harterink, the Forsyth County Public Library public information officer.
Harterink said there's also a monitor above the circulation desk that displays library programs, online resources, and events happening at the Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center and other public library branches.
Harterink said that the Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center is the oldest branch in the Forsyth County Public Library system. The branch at 1110 Seventh Street dates back to 1927, when it was in the Chestnut Street YMCA. After moving to a room on East Sixth Street in 1931, the East Winston Branch Library opened on November 14, 1954, on land donated by three doctors: H.D. Malloy Sr., H.R. Malloy, and J.C. Jordan.
In 1998, the branch was named the county's first heritage center and was later renamed to honor the three doctors who donated the land in 2004, Harterink said.
Forsyth County Public Library Director Yolanda Bolden said the branch's renovation ensures that the community has a traditional library with special collections. One of the collections includes photos of Atkins High School graduates that date back to the early 1930s.
Harterink said the branch also features Shades of Forsyth, an oral history project that highlights 17 African Americans from the East Winston community and their contributions to Forsyth County.
"There's a lot of great history within those walls of that library. We want to continue to commemorate and celebrate the history and cultural exhibits over time there. We're intentional about preserving and elevating African American history in Forsyth County, and that commitment remains unchanged at that branch," Bolden said. "So, we're excited about the reopening, and we can't wait to start this next chapter."
