Digitalsmiths co-founder Ben Weinberger joins Sling TV

Ben Weinberger, the former co-founder and CEO of video technology company Digitalsmiths, has been named senior vice president and chief product officer at Sling TV.

Weinberger will oversee product development and product management at Sling TV, the Internet TV unit launched earlier this year by satellite television giant Dish Network. Weinberger will report directly to Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch.

Weinberger was CEO of Raleigh-based Digitalsmiths until it was acquired last year for $135 million in cash by TiVo.

Founded in 1998, Digitalsmiths’ technology made it easier for subscribers of video content to find what they want to watch on a wide variety of screens – including TVs, mobile phones, PCs and tablets. Its Seamless Discovery technology also made recommendations to viewers based on their viewing habits.

“Since Sling TV’s arrival four months ago, we have added more than 40 domestic channels and thousands of hours of on-demand titles,” Lynch said in a statement. “This influx of programming makes it increasingly important that our content discovery process connects consumers quickly and seamlessly to the sports, shows and movies they love. Ben’s background makes him the ideal fit to lead our effort in creating a world class next-generation TV experience.”
