American Airlines adding nonstop flights on one of RDU’s busiest routes

American Airlines is joining four other carriers in offering nonstop flights between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Boston.

American, the second busiest airline at RDU in terms of passengers, announced Tuesday that it will offer five round-trip flights a day between the Triangle and Boston Logan International on Sundays through Fridays, and three round-trips on Saturdays. American also announced two new nonstop flights between Boston and Wilmington International Airport on Saturdays only.

The new RDU flights will begin Thursday, May 7, followed by the first Wilmington flights two days later, according to company spokeswoman Crystal Byrd. Tickets go on sale Jan. 20.

Boston is one of the most competitive destinations for airlines serving RDU. American joins Delta, Frontier, JetBlue and Spirit in offering nonstop flights between the two airports. The only other city served by five airlines with nonstop flights from RDU is New Orleans.

American will use Embraer E175 planes on the RDU and Wilmington flights. They will have 12 first class and 64 main cabin seats.

About 23% of passengers flying in and out of RDU took American last year. That’s second only to Delta, which handled about 31%.
