Business

More Raleigh and Durham stores open this week. The latest on Belk, Kohl’s and others.

Not all retail stores in the Triangle opened over the weekend, even though they were free to under Phase One of Gov. Roy Cooper’s reopen plan.

Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh opened Monday, and The Streets at Southpoint in Durham opened Tuesday. Both malls are taking actions like limiting hours, changing out air filters more often than usual, adding more hand sanitizer stations and reconfiguring common area tables to be more distanced.

Belk and Kohls also opened Monday.

Under the Phase One rules, non-essential businesses could open to customers at 5 p.m. Friday, at 50% capacity and with social distancing and strict cleaning rules in place.

Many small businesses in the Triangle are taking things a bit slower.

For stores that do open, be prepared for changes, as many stores have closed dressing rooms, introduced restrictions at cosmetics counters and implemented no-contact pay policies (no cash).

We’ll update this list as we know more. In the meantime, call before you go.

Bed, Bath & Beyond

Starting Friday (May 8), Bed, Bath & Beyond offered contactless curbside pickup at some stores in Raleigh and Durham. Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., shoppers can search and pay for items online, then select the closest store offering pickup. The store said in a news release that items will be available within two hours of ordering.

No timetable was given for in-store shopping, but a recent Forbes article said all stores will be closed for customers until at least May 16.

Belk

According to the Belk site, all 64 North Carolina stores will open at noon on Monday (the exception is the Durham location, scheduled to open on Wednesday).

The Charlotte-based department store chain closed all 291 stores in 16 states in March.

In the Triangle, Belk has stores at Crabtree Valley Mall and Triangle Town Center in Raleigh; at Cary Town Center in Cary; at The Streets of Southpoint in Durham; at Garner Station in Garner. There are also locations in Zebulon, Smithfield, Dunn, Sanford and Rocky Mount. Find other Belk locations here.

Best Buy

Best Buy stores have been open for curbside pickup, but will also have shopping by appointment until stores can fully reopen.

JC Penney

JC Penney has announced a “gradual” reopening, but gives no details on North Carolina stores. At JC Penney stores reopened in other states, some offer in-store shopping and curbside pickup, while some are only offering curbside pickup.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s plans to reopen its stores on Monday, May 11. The new hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Macy’s

The Macy’s website says that stores are “gradually reopening” in this area, and we have been told by The Streets of Southpoint management that the store in Durham is scheduled to reopen on May 18.

We have no other specifics at this time, but Macy’s has already opened in states where shopping rules have been lifted. The stores are offering curbside pick-up for online purchases. Get more details and check for updates here.

In the Triangle, Macy’s has stores at Crabtree Valley Mall and Triangle Town Center in Raleigh and at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom announced this week that they will close 16 stores in at least nine states — but the Durham location at The Streets of Southpoint is safe, as is the SouthPark store in Charlotte.

As for when it will reopen, that hasn’t been revealed. Right now, Nordstrom says it is working toward reopening in phases, but gives no specific timeline.

The locations in Durham and Charlotte do offer curbside pickup of online orders from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Old Navy, GAP

Gap Inc., which owns Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, closed all stores in North America on March 19. Gap says it will reopen about 800 stores by the end of May, but no specific timetable was given.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Fifth Avenue says it is reopening some stores based on guidance from individual states. Some stores have reopened, but no specifics were given about North Carolina’s sole location, at Triangle Town Center in Raleigh. Some stores have offered curbside pickup, but the Raleigh store does not.
