Skechers, one of the country’s largest athletic footwear brands, is opening a new store at Cary’s Crossroads Plaza strip mall.

The store will fill K&G Fashion’s former space, a 10,400-square-foot storefront adjacent to Michaels and Old Navy. Crossroads’ Skechers is expected to open this summer as the first of several new Triangle locations, according to CBRE Raleigh, the retail services firm that facilitated Skechers’ contract with the mall.

“Skechers is an iconic brand that caters to all ages from infants to adults,” Jon Stanley, a senior vice president with CBRE, said in a press release. “We’re thrilled they chose Crossroads Plaza to open their second location in the Triangle. They will be an excellent addition to the shopping center’s strong tenant mix.”

Besides its signature sneakers, Skechers features apparel and accessories for men, women and children. The company has 4,170 stores worldwide, including its original Triangle location at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh.

Crossroads Plaza and the nearby South Hills mall, which recently sold for $38.4 million, are two of Cary’s oldest shopping centers. Developers and town leaders hope new retail options such as Skechers will attract increased foot traffic and promote further development.

“There’s huge potential over there,” Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht told The News & Observer. “I think something really special can happen there and it will rebirth the Crossroads area because a lot is tired over there.”

Skechers will join more than 60 retailers and restaurants at Crossroads Plaza, including Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Ross, Petco, Marshalls, and HomeGoods.
