Wawa plans to open its first stores in North Carolina. Here’s what we know so far.

Wawa plans to open its first North Carolina locations by 2024, WSOC in Charlotte reported.

WRAL and WBTV also reported the 58-year-old company’s expansion plans. The News & Observer has contacted the company for more details.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Wawa’s one-of-a-kind brand and offering to this market in the near future,” Lori Bruce, the company’s public relations manager, told WRAL. “We look forward to serving the community with our quality fresh food and beverages and, as always, our deep commitment to the communities in which we operate.”

The convenience store chain will compete with local favorites Sheetz and 7-Eleven, the latter of which is returning to North Carolina after a decades-long hiatus, as The N&O reported.

Wawa Inc. began in 1803 as a New Jersey iron foundry before evolving into a dairy processing plant and finally a food market. The company’s modern incarnation includes more than 630 locations along the East Coast, according to its website. About half include gas stations.

Wawa markets are known for their hoagies, Wawa wraps and “Sizzlis” — signature hot breakfast sandwiches.
