First 100 Aldi shoppers will win prizes at March 14 grand opening of new NC store
Aldi didn’t announce it would open its new store on N.C. 86 in Hillsborough a week earlier than expected, but the news spread fast on social media.
The store, which has been under construction since last year, had a soft opening Wednesday. The Aldi website and a store manager previously said the store would open on March 13.
The grand opening celebration, with gift bags, gift cards and golden tickets, will still be Thursday, March 14, a spokeswoman said.
The German grocer with a cult following is known for low prices and specialty home goods and foods like cheese and wine. It keeps prices down through limited checkouts, self-bagging, and grocery carts that can be “rented” for a quarter, encouraging shoppers to return them to the corral. The store also offers grocery delivery and curbside pickup.
“Our stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier,” said Krysta Cearley, Salisbury vice president for ALDI. “We’re excited to open our first ALDI store in Hillsborough and introduce local customers to a new, more affordable way of shopping.”
The Hillsborough store is located at 2010 N.C. 86 South, near the Sheetz gas station and across the street from Hampton Pointe shopping center, which includes Walmart and Home Depot. The site is just off exit 165 on Interstate 85.
This is Aldi’s second location in Orange County. The first store opened in 2022 at Eastgate Crossing shopping center on East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

▪ March 6: Aldi soft opening at 2010 N.C. 86 South in Hillsborough.
▪ The store is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. It’s located at the southeastern corner of the N.C. 86 and Interstate 85 interchange, beside the Sheetz gas station and the new Hillsborough Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership.
▪ March 14: Grand opening celebration starts with a 9 a.m. ribbon cutting. The first 100 customers will get “a bag of Aldi goodies” and a Golden Ticket that could be worth up to $100.
▪ A limited number of free shopping totes will be handed out on March 14.
▪ Shoppers who visit the store March 14-17 can enter a drawing for the chance to win a $500 gift card. The drawing is limited to one person per household.
