A new business is replacing the Regal movie theater in Apex. Here’s what we know
A fitness studio with locations across the Southeast seems to be eyeing the Triangle for expansion.
Onelife Fitness, a gym offering strength classes, workout space and other amenities, is on the leasing brochure for Beaver Creek Crossings. The News & Observer reached out to CBRE, which handles leasing for Beaver Creek Crossings, on July 17 for more information about the leasing brochure.
Specifically, the Apex shopping center shows Onelife replacing the 45,159-square-foot Regal Beaver Creek movie theater, Triangle Business Journal first reported. The fitness company initially declined to comment on The News & Observer’s story, but later shared a press release confirming that the business will open at 1441 Beaver Creek Commons Drive in Apex.
According to the press release, Onelife is expected to open in the Triangle in 2025, bringing more than 100 jobs to the area.
In March, CTO Realty Growth, which owns the Apex shopping center, wrote in a press release that it “executed an approximately 45,000 square foot lease with a regional fitness tenant for the replacement of Regal Cinemas” at Beaver Creek Crossings.
The News & Observer reported in March 2023 that the theater would be one of 39 across the country slated to close, after Cineworld Group, the parent company of Regal Cinemas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2022. The closure would leave Apex without a movie theater, causing residents to travel to nearby towns such as Cary, Morrisville and Holly Springs to catch a film.
The Beaver Creek Crossings theater remains open (selling $1 tickets for select movies this summer), but Regal did not immediately respond to The News & Observer’s request on July 17 for more information.
The shopping center is home to T.J.Maxx, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Ulta, among other retailers.
What is Onelife Fitness?
Founded in 2011 by brothers Kirk and John Galiani, Onelife Fitness operates more than 50 gyms in Georgia, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia. Kirk Galiani is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Greensboro. In 2018, the brothers sold a majority stake to HRS Management, the family office of Apollo Global Management founder Josh Harris, and Delos Capital, Reuters reported.
Its facilities offer workout areas with strength and cardio equipment, and boutique studio classes. Other amenities available to Onelife members include saunas, whirlpools, hydro-massage, on-site childcare, locker rooms, basketball courts, racquetball courts and pools.
No Onelife Fitness locations are currently open in North Carolina, according to the company’s website.
Repurposing retail sites isn’t new for the fitness company. Onelife plans to open a new location in a former Giant Food grocery store in Manassas, Virginia. In October, the company opened its 52nd location in a former Toys “R” Us in Clinton, Maryland, complete with athletic turf training areas, a mind/body studio with barre, yoga and Pilates classes, a boxing studio, a spin studio and more.
