About 25 new PNC Bank branches are coming to Charlotte as part of expansion plans

PNC Bank plans to add at least 25 new branches to the Charlotte area over the next five years.

The expansion is part of PNC’s $1.5 billion branch investment plan to open new sites and renovate existing locations across the U.S., according to Weston Andress, PNC’s Western Carolinas regional president.

The Pittsburgh-based bank plans to open more than 200 new locations in 12 cities over the next five years. In that time, it’ll also renovate 1,400 existing branches.

The reasoning: It’s all about customer service.

“Although banking has certainly moved more toward technology and digital offerings, we fully understand the need for a personal touch as we grow our business,” Andress said. “The branches play a meaningful role in how we provide solutions and financial advice to our clients … whether they be retail customers or commercial and corporate customers. We pride ourselves on these personal relationships and we’re expanding that now.”

PNC’s customer service efforts have paid off in the past. The bank earned a four-way first place ranking in an American Customer Satisfaction Index Survey released earlier this year.

Expansion plans

Besides Charlotte, PNC will be adding branches in Raleigh, Atlanta, Orlando, Phoenix and Tampa. It’ll also enter the markets of Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Denver and Miami.

Miami will see the biggest expansion with about 40 branches.

PNC has 17 existing branches in Charlotte and nearby suburbs. It’s the region’s eighth-largest bank in terms of local deposits, which total about $1.9 billion, the Charlotte Business Journal reported.

Charlotte will be PNC’s second biggest focus, Andress said. With the city’s exponential growth and large banking industry, the move makes sense.

“The population and the job growth … and frankly people are moving to this area where PNC is very well known,” Andress said. “The other thing is that our existing operations, which are focused to some extent on retail, but primarily on corporate and institutional banking asset management, have done very well here. It has given the company the confidence that our business model works here in Charlotte. So, we’re going to expand it.”

Andress said to stay tuned for details on new branch locations and whether existing Charlotte branches will be renovated.

“This is the next step in growing our business here,” Andress said. “This will put our business on a different trajectory in serving our customer’s needs.”
