FedEx to lay off 340 workers in Raleigh and Durham as it cuts and closes shipping centers
Federal Express will lay off a few hundred Triangle-based employees, mostly deliverers in Durham and Raleigh, the company notified state and local officials Tuesday.
FedEx plans to permanently close a shipping center on Englert Drive in South Durham, affecting 123 positions, while eliminating 218 jobs at its Atlantic Avenue shipping center in North Raleigh. The layoffs will become official on Feb. 3.
Federal law requires companies to file WARN Notices at least two months before conducting mass job cuts. In two Dec. 3 letters to the N.C. Department of Commerce, FedEx said it was reducing its area workforce “due to a business reorganization.” The company provided the notifications to Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams.
Affected employees in Durham and Raleigh are not part of a union. The company said it will offer workers “options to consider transfer to new locations, severance, or a leave of absence during which they may pursue other positions with FedEx.”
Of the 341 layoffs, more than 250 are couriers.
This was not FedEx’s first announced layoff in North Carolina this year. In June, the company said it would close a shipping center in Conover, about an hour’s drive north of Charlotte, impacting 69 jobs.
