Lenovo projects to add 420 jobs and invest $77 million to grow its manufacturing facility between Burlington and Greensboro.
The Guilford County Board of Commissioners unanimously awarded Lenovo an economic incentive last week to more than double its current workforce in the town of Whitsett by the end of 2027. If the company hits its goals, it will receive approximately $1.2 million in cash incentive grants.
Lenovo spokesperson David Hamilton said in a written statement to The News & Observer that Lenovo intends to make “various servers” at its enlarged site. The company is still “very early in the expansion process at this time,” he said.
“This investment builds on our global footprint of more than 30 manufacturing sites across 11 markets and reinforces our strategy of staying close to customers,” he wrote.
Lenovo opened its Whitsett plant in 2007, and six years later launched its first U.S. personal computer production line on the campus. The company today is the world’s largest PC maker and has around 400 current employees based in the small Guilford County town.
This hiring news comes two months after Lenovo confirmed it was laying off 3% of its U.S. workforce, which impacted some at its Morrisville campus.
“Like all businesses, we regularly review our cost structure to align with external market dynamics and make workforce adjustments where necessary,” a Lenovo spokesperson shared in a July statement to The News & Observer.
Whitsett is about 50 miles west of the Lenovo North American headquarters in Research Triangle Park, which the Chinese company opened 20 years ago after acquiring IBM’s personal computing division. Today, most of Lenovo’s U.S. workforce is based in North Carolina.
The Guilford County Board of Commissioners noted before its Sept. 18 vote that Lenovo “is also requesting state and other local incentives before making a location decision.” Both the company and local officials this week discussed the expansion plans as progressing.
“Lenovo, a global technology leader in personal computing, IT infrastructure, software, solutions, and services, is advancing a multi-million-dollar investment to expand its server manufacturing and fulfillment capabilities,” the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce announced Tuesday.
