A decades-old shop in Durham is closing soon, and two other stores in Raleigh and Cary shut their doors abruptly.

Shoppers still have time to make a final trip to the locally owned Ninth Street store, but there was no advance warning for customers who might have wanted to visit the Raleigh and Cary businesses.

Here’s what to know about the recent closings.

Durham’s Vaguely Reminiscent is closing

Vaguely Reminiscent is shutting its doors after 43 years on Ninth Street.

Carol Anderson, founder and owner of the unique, 600-square-foot store, is retiring, she told The News & Observer by phone earlier this week.

The store’s final day hasn’t been announced, but shoppers can now take advantage of discounts. As of Monday, April 13, the store was offering 25% off clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, socks, hair items and toys.

Vaguely Reminiscent is located at 728 Ninth St. in Durham.

“We are grateful for the community’s support, and it has been my goal to always in turn support the community that supports me,” Anderson said.

Painted Tree Boutiques abruptly closes all locations

Painted Tree Boutiques, a national retailer offering brick-and-mortar space for a host of vendors, ceased operations Tuesday, April 14.

All locations were closed, including the Triangle’s two stores in Raleigh (7444 Creedmoor Road) and Cary (240 Crossroads Blvd).

Vendors were given no advance warning. The company emailed vendors, instructing them to collect their items from stores.

“We understand the impact this has on you and your business, and we are truly sorry,” Painted Tree Boutiques wrote to vendors in the email. “We know many of you have invested significant time, energy, and resources into building your spaces at Painted Tree, and this is not the outcome any of us hoped for.”
