Overview

The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe high-performance luxury grand tourer is Mercedes's flagship GT, available in five trims. A 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged GT 43 with rear-wheel drive and 416 horsepower is the base trim, with the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and 4Matic+ AWD standard on all the other trims. These are the 469-hp GT 55, the 577-hp GT 63, the 603-hp track-ready GT 63 Pro, and the 805-hp plug-in hybrid GT 63 S E Performance. A 9-speed AMG Speedshift MCT automatic transmission is common to all. The AMG GT Coupe is aimed at buyers looking for supercar performance and Mercedes luxury in a front-engined grand tourer.

What's New for 2026

The 2026 AMG GT Coupe gains a highly exclusive GT 63 APXGP Edition to celebrate the brand's involvement in the F1 movie by Joseph Kosinski. It references the "APXGP Formula 1" cars in this work of fiction, complete with the same livery and Race Gold styling details. Only 52 will be made. The GT 63 and GT 63 S E Performance also gain access to four new Manufaktur paint colors: Kalahari Gold Magno, Green Hell Magno, Copper Orange Magno, and Côte d'Azur Light Blue Metallic.

The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe's price starts at $106,500.

Exterior

The AMG GT Coupe oozes exotic style and aggression with a long hood, short deck, frameless doors, wide rear haunches, and a low roofline. The wide AMG Panamericana grille scowls menacingly and has vertical slats. The GT 43 has 19-inch wheels and all the rest, except for the GT 63 Pro with its 21s, run on 20s. The Pro also gets a blacked-out exterior and fixed rear wing. Several packages can add black-trim, chrome, carbon fiber, or more, depending on the trim.

Interior

Inside, the main focus areas are the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 11.9-inch MBUX touchscreen; tech features include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation, AMG Track Pace info (g-forces, boost, and lap times), and 10-speaker Burmester audio, but the top trims also get a head-up display.

You get Nappa leather upholstery, heated power front seats, dual-zone climate control, 64-color ambient lighting, and more, while top trims also gain features such as ventilated and massaging seats. The tiny rear seat accommodates people up to 4'11", but the trunk volume is a decent 11.3 cu-ft (or just 7.2 cu-ft in the 63 S E Performance.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Five variants from accessible GT 43 to hypercar-rivaling 805-hp GT 63 S E Performance
  • Handcrafted V8 delivers visceral character in GT 55, 63, and Pro models
  • GT 63 Pro adds genuine track capability with enhanced cooling
  • AMG 4Matic+ can send 100% torque rearward for adjustable handling
  • GT 43 offers RWD and F1-derived turbo technology at entry price

Cons:

  • Two usable seats limit daily versatility
  • V8s' 16 mpg combined are thirsty even by sports-car standards
  • GT 63 S E Performance exceeds $200,000 before options
  • Interior uses older-generation MBUX with touch-sensitive steering controls
  • Limited cargo space compared to front-engine grand touring rivals

Verdict

The AMG GT Coupe has an unmatched number of choices for the enthusiast, from the purity of a turbo-four base model with RWD to the hypercar performance of the 805-hp GT 63 S E Performance. The PHEV is complicated and expensive, though, with a small trunk, so our money is on the $138K GT 55 as a great all-rounder that still reaches 60 mph in under four seconds, giving you the full V8 4Matic+ experience.

The AMG GT may be accused of lacking some steering feel compared to a 911, and it may feel a tad more like a grand tourer, but it's still a superb sports car, and its charm lies in its breadth of ability. In most metrics, it has the measure of its rivals, even exalted ones like the 911 and Vantage.
