Overview

The 2025 Mazda 3 compact sedan and hatchback aren't ordinary compact cars, because they offer a decidedly premium driving experience at non-premium prices. Both body styles provide uniquely engaging driving dynamics in this class, along with upmarket cabins, though they don't major on cabin or cargo space.

A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Skyactive-G engine does duty, either naturally aspirated with 186 horsepower or turbocharged with up to 250 hp on premium fuel, with FWD standard and i-Activ AWD available on select trims. The 2025 3 continues to cater to people who want a class-above driving experience in this segment.

What's New for 2025?

For 2025, the base 2.5 S trim level is expanded to include the hatchback, not just the sedan, lowering the 2025 Mazda 3's price of admission to $24,150. The Carbon Edition trim already offered with the turbo engine becomes available with the base engine and AWD, along with gloss-black mirrors, Polymetal Grey paint, black 18-inch alloys, a wireless charger, and a red leather interior.

A premium Bose audio system is now standard on the Premium and Turbo Premium Plus, and the latter also gains a black rear wing in sedan format. Select Sport and higher trims gain the Alexa voice assistant. Connected navigation is now standard on Premium and Premium Plus trims. The hatchback loses its Greige interior color option.

Exterior

Mazda's Kodo design language has aged extremely well on the fourth-generation Mazda 3, considering it's been around since 2018. It has clean surfacing and minimal character lines, exuding almost a concept-car-like air. Base trims' grille is matte black, and the higher ones gloss black; LEDs are standard for headlights, DRLs, and taillights. Wheels range from 16- to 18-inch alloys. A power-sliding glass moonroof is fitted to top trims and sportier sedans get a rear spoiler.

Interior

The Mazda 3's cabin is a cut above, with premium finishes. Base trims have cloth upholstery, air conditioning, and push-button start, and higher trims gain items like heated front seats, a power driver's seat, leatherette or leather upholstery, and more. Base trims have an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Alexa built in, wired smartphone integration, and 8-speaker audio, but higher trims gain wireless connectivity, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and 12-speaker Bose audio.

Price Range and Best Value Trim

The $26,540 S Preferred trim stands out as the best value, gaining a moonroof, heated front seats, and a power driver seat for a reasonable step up from the base.

Pros:

Verdict

The Mazda 3 is one of the most rewarding compact cars to live with, thanks to its engaging driving dynamics, upscale cabin finishes that challenge some premium brands, and stylish good looks. The base engine with FWD offers adequate power for daily use, but you're given plenty of choice with available AWD and a potent 250-hp turbo available as well, the latter a veritable hot hatch in sheep's clothing.

The tradeoffs are real, though, with packaging being the most obvious. It's cosy rather than roomy inside, the infotainment system feels a generation behind the latest ones, and there are no hybrid powertrains available at all. Still, when it comes to crash safety, style, and driver engagement, this may be the pick of the small cars, despite its age.
