Cary Towne Center demolition continues as Epic Games clears way for new HQ

Cary Towne Center is expected to be fully demolished this summer as the tech company Epic Games clears the way for a sprawling campus.

Only one structure on the 87 acres that housed the mall will remain standing: the Belk building.

Demolition began in early March on the 980,000-square-foot mall, which was 40 years old and bleeding tenants before it was snapped up by Epic Games last year for $95 million.

Elka Looks, a spokesperson for Epic Games, said this week they are shooting to have the campus open by 2024 or 2025.

Looks said they’re taking pains to recycle the concrete crushed onsite for use in future development.

“Where we can be sustainable, we’re trying to be,” she told The News & Observer.

Epic Games is valued at $31.5 billion, the company announced earlier this month, and the existing office space along Crossroads Boulevard is no longer able to contain the rapidly growing workforce.

The former headquarters and new campus are only about three miles apart, both just off Interstate 40 and the Raleigh Beltline (I-440).

The video game company, which has been based in Cary for the past two decades, is behind the wildly popular game Fortnite. It’s also making strides in the virtual reality space and has been gobbling up other companies like the makers of the Rocket League video game and music marketplace Bandcamp.
